They are synchronized with the engine to provide timed lubrication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to arrange to supply oil to cylinder (or) when they supply L.O to engine<\/strong><br \/>\nLube oil be fed to the piston at the time when the top two piston rings pass the lubricating holes in the cylinder during the pistons upstroke.<br \/>\n<strong>Timed lubrication<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Lubricators of each cylinder are synchronised with engine to provide timed lubrication<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Cylinder oil is fed; at the time when top two piston rings pass the oil feed points, in the cylinder during piston upstroke [4\/S and 2\/S Uniflow engines]<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Loop scavenge Sulzer RND engine use accumulator system of timed lubrication<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Accumulator provides constant oil pressure, which is greater than scavenge air pressure, with uniform supply at every period around TDC and BDC positions.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0In this way, oil is delivered to quill, only when low pressure and temperature prevails on running surface of cylinder liner.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a08 supply points at top, and 1 point for scavenge and 1 point for exhaust ports at bottom<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timed lubrication has little merits, because<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0It requires very rapid injection of oil at correct time, with correct amount, and pressure<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0It is discharging through very small bore; with long pipes to various oil feed points<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Having a non-return valve at the top of lubricator, hence it complicates the timed injection<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0The hot combustion gases tend to carbonise the oil, and block the orifices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lubricator Quill<\/strong><br \/>\nLubricator quills are arranged around the periphery of the cylinder liners and connect cylinder lubricators with oil feed points in the cylinder liners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Requirement of lubricator<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Must be capable of delivering regularly every stroke a quantity of oil against moderate pressure<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Must have a wide range of adjustment<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0The quantity of discharged oil per strike should be clearly visible<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Can be operated by hand<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you do lubricator quill overhaul ?<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Remove nut on lubricator quill (L.O connector)<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Take out lubricator quill fitted directly to the cylinder without passing through the jacket cooling space.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Remove lubricator quill (L.O outlet side)<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Take out spring and non return ball valve.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Clean all parts in diesel oil.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Check non return valve for occur.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Check spring tension.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Place the non return valve and spring into the lubricator quill then tighten out.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Fit the lubricator quill to the cylinder tighten the nut.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0After fitting the lubricator quill, It is operated by hand at the same time check the cylinder liner wall for sufficient oil come out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REQUIREMENTS OF CYLINDER LUB OIL<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0It must reduce sliding friction between piston rings and cylinder liner to a minimum.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0It must process adequate viscosity at high working temperature and still be sufficiently fluid to spread rapidly over the entire working surfaces to form a good adsorbed oil film.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0It must form an effective seal in conjunction with the piston rings, preventing gas blow by, burning away of the oil film and lack of compression.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0It must burn cleanly, leaving as little and as soft a deposit as possible.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0It must effectively prevent the build up of deposits in the piston ring zones and exhaust ports.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0It must effectively neutralize the corrosive effects on the mineral acids formed during combustion of the fuel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Effects of excess lubrication:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Fouling of ring grooves and resulting ring zone deposits.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Consequently, loss of gas sealing effect and blow by follows.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Fouling of scavenge space and scavenge fire follows.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Also affecting combustion process.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Leading to breakage of piston rings<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Fouling of exhaust system and turbocharger.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Increase consumption.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Effects of reduce lubrication:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Promote wear of liner and rings<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Overheating of local area resulting micro seizure due to lack of boundary lubrication.<br \/>\n\u2666\u00a0Consequently major damage to piston and cylinder liner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to check correct amount of lubricator feeding ?<\/strong><br \/>\nChecking by open scavenging drain (little coming out O.K) at sea.<br \/>\nIn port: Check the liner is wet or not (thin layer wet O.K)<br \/>\nOil has to not collect at the scavenge space.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5727 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/seadonna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_2368-300x96.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"153\" height=\"49\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seadonna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_2368-300x96.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seadonna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_2368-1024x327.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/seadonna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_2368-768x245.jpg 768w, https:\/\/seadonna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_2368-155x49.jpg 155w, https:\/\/seadonna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_2368.jpg 1125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 153px) 100vw, 153px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lubricator The lubricators are driven by a common drive from the engine it supply cylinder oil to the cylinder.
